Black and White
Beneath her skin
Her so-called curse
Are years of unspoken battles
So she thrive in solitude
finds silence a melodic tune
and darkness a ray of light
She worship the night
cling onto the shadows
where she is neither “black”
nor are they “white”

Oh those shadows that obscure the differences between us…sometimes shadows are a good thing!

I love this. Years ago, there were jewelry commercials where the shadows were wearing the jewelry. They had two strengths…they highlighted the merchandise, rather than the models. And skin color and outward beauty were simply not a factor. I have often thought the world might just be a better place if we were all blind, and not so concerned with outside things…
This poem touches me deeply. Thank you.

The shadows are a good place to soften distinctions and judgments. Sometimes it is best not to see too clearly.

A very thought provoking poem. Color blind shadows, would all those that cast them be the same.

Those last lines made me think of the rampant racism that permeates our world…black and white seemingly always at odds on some level. A wonderful poem, Maria.

It is sad that mankind cannot bring all of our colours and differences out of the shadows and into the light to admire our uniqueness. This is a very moving piece, Maria.
