Young Dumb and Broke: A trek from Mt. Manunggal to Mt. Mauyog

Jane Austen once wrote, “What are men to rocks and mountains?”

Just recently, my escapade with the adventure-seeking squad echoed this very line as we faced the rocks and mountains of Mt. Manunggal and Mt. Mauyog head on. These are two of the most famous peaks here in Cebu that are often hiked by beginners and seasoned mountaineers alike. And we don’t want to miss that, do we?

We started with a foggy greeting. On our way to Balamban, we were welcomed with a misty surrounding that almost felt like entering a world of miasma. Most of us were worried that we won’t get a chance to see the panoramic view atop but gladly Mr. Sun was kind enough to smile upon us.

From the junction of Brgy. Sunog, we said our prayers and started our trek. I should add here that before anyone can proceed with the adventure, you will have to register and pay various fees. I’m not going to elaborate, though, how we ended up broke but I suggest you bring extra money.

Moving along… It was quite a long walk but a fun one. Thanks to Marc and his Mi Gente, we spend the day with this song in our heads. We even danced uphill but we were badly choreographed. Should we do better next time? Yes, please!!

Dead-reckoning

Dead-reckoning

With a languid gait, she walks towards the stream. The scent of fall leaves hang in the air as her feet press the ground. She is a natural beauty, that’s what they say. But before her reflection, she only sees sadness hiding beneath a feigned smile. Her face embedded with years of self-doubt. The water feels like a looking glass and she dives into the labyrinth of her gritty past. She swims into the muffled silence, recalling her feats and defeats, descending to the very beginning of her life. And she surfaced proud. Today is her dead-reckoning.

Rivers of the past
Coursing through her memories
Running wide and deep

This week’s words are: Feign, Gait, Torn, Press, Left, Labyrinthine (complicated, torturous, resembling a labyrinth), Look, Embed, Malformed, Gritty, Natural, Dead-reckoning (In navigation, dead reckoning is the process of calculating one’s current position by using a previously determined position, or fix, and advancing that position based upon known or estimated speeds over elapsed time and course.)

Rain, Rain

rainrain-small

Rain, Rain

The forest is still, not a single bird chirping
And the summer sky is a cumulous of rage
I am drenched in the stillness of remembering
Of what I have lost, of what I still have
But in the midst of the surrounding clamor
The pitter patter and the wind’s howl
My heart remains still— unperturbed, relaxed
Like the eye of a tornado devoid of wrath

Quest

Quest

Sunrays breaking through
The drips and drops
In the midst of puddles—
A skip and a hop
Confronting life’s quest
With half a smile
I see through your deep breaths
And untold sighs

Past Lifetimes

past_lifetimes_by_reylia-d7a00u3

Past Lifetimes

There it was again
That old, familiar feeling
Like a déjà vu—
Detailed dreams of us
From different times
And places

That old, familiar feeling
Of being drawn into
Your gaze and smile

An old sensation
Of swimming
In a history of us
From which I do not drown

It felt like a
A once upon a time
Taken apart
And put back together
Again and again

On Persistent Winters

On Persistent Winters

The snow kisses the trees and fields
And wrap them with a white quilt
But little did the snowflakes know
I have found my summer in you

On persistent winters I am snug with love
Slithering my way to feel your warmth
My winter love, oh how I pray
For time to freeze this very day

In response to dVerse’s Poetics: Wish you were here… hosted by the lovely De.

If only I could taste the winter with that somebody, I’d probably write this on a post-it note over a breakfast in bed. But, unfortunately, this will have to wait. Haha! A big “AYE, AYE” to De for saying that April is the wildest poetry month.

Also, still two letters behind, here’s a late entry written for A to Z Challenge: Letter O.

Not Letting Go

Not Letting Go

Not letting go is the deep sigh on a busy afternoon
When memories poke at your mundane routine
It is throwing a boomerang thousand miles away
Waiting for it to spin right back to you
It is taking a table for two on a solitary night
Sitting face to face with resignation
It is wrapping yourself with those thin arms
Bracing yourself for the cold

The only thing I have to fear…

106

The only thing I have to fear…

The only thing I have to fear is living a life with my soul tethered to a thread of lies. That in each move I make, each path I take, the strings crisscross. That without me knowing, I have weaved a delicate fabric of pretense.

The only thing I have to fear is not having the will to cut the thread. That I get at ease with the charade, and life, in its most cunning way, has tied the strings tighter. That I am left clothed with a skin-tight, glossy façade.

So here I am, trying to befriend my weaknesses, tending over my scars. Here I am, cherishing my passion, reaching out to my zeal. For the only thing I have to fear is living somebody else’s life while throwing away mine.

The wind’s kiss reminds
To live an untainted life—
Be yourself and smile

In response to dVerse’s Monday Haibun: The only thing we have to fear… hosted by Toni and MindLoveMisery’s Menagerie’s Photo Challenge #161 by Nekneeraj.

This stirring photo by one of my favorite surreal photographers, Oleg Oprisco, reminds of my fear of living a life pretense. I will forever be a work in progress but I am glad to say that the thread has started to loosen. 🙂

My Name Means Gold

my_name_means_gold_by_reylia-d7stwf5

My Name Means Gold

I am my own smith
And life is my crucible
The longer I set myself on fire
The more I am purified
Unmined— my heart rests
Hidden beneath the inferno
Needing no affirmation
That my name means gold
