The Peace of Wild Things by Wendell Berry

Featured poems and spoken word poetry

When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

Sharing this beautifully penned piece from Wendell Berry that I have just learned about today. I fell instantly in love with this poem on first read. It’s simple yet deep, expressing in poetic lines how the natural world can quell our anxieties of the present and the future. This is something that we all can relate in these trying times. May we find our way back to the gardens, forests and mountains where inner peace reside.

Wind & Kisses
Shadorma

Sweet and soft
The northeast wind blows—
Heart tickles
Skin shivers
As Boreas sends his kisses
In the breath of wind

Today’s Filipino word prompt is “amihan” which refers to “the northeast wind, breeze”. This is another piece inspired by Boreas, the Greek god of the north wind.
