Maybe

Maybe

I sit by the bedside table, hands tapping above the desk. The room is dark except for the faint light creeping from under the door. It’s 2 AM yet my heart and mind are still debating, “Should I ask you again?

I look at my phone thinking maybe you’ll change your mind. Maybe you’ll remember the laughter.  Maybe you’ll remember the stories that we shared together in those five years. Maybe you’ll remember our small fights that turn to cuddles at night. Maybe you’ll remember the places we’ve been into and the places we wanted to go. Maybe you’ll remember me. Maybe you’ll remember us.

Maybe, just maybe, “we” still matter to you.

Most people would find this absurd— to keep on waiting for someone. To stare blankly at your phone, waiting for that one single text saying, “I still do.”

I know you might have woken up and decided you can’t do this anymore. So you stopped answering. Chances are I overwhelm you. Chances are I am a walking mistake to you.

But then this maybe that I cling to, might be an exception.

So, I waited.

Because maybe, somehow, we could start anew.

I find it a breath of fresh air listening to other people’s love story instead of mourning over mine. Lol. Love, I learned, is both beautiful and terrifying. But always, worth it. Here’s a little something I wrote for a friend whose love story is riding on a roller coaster. Today marks their 5th year anniversary. I wish to the stars that they’ll get through love’s bumpy ride.

Memories and Smoke

photo-20160904121409530

Adam settled into his favorite bench, took out his pipe and lit it, and then filled the afternoon with recollection of memories and stories, of smiles and tears.

Autumn has come around and the world is bathed into a crisp ocher and golden brown again. She had always loved this season, he thought. His mind wandered back to the time when he came home to find Eve nestled in the heap of tawny leaves like a bird curled at the core of its nest; her lips arched into a smile. He kissed her the way a prince would have kissed sleeping beauty—only that she never woke up. Eve lay cold and lifeless as he broke into tears and disbelief.

He’d never seen autumn that dreadful. Since then, part of him died each day when the leaves fell from the trees. Lost in memories and smoke, he waited for winter.

Ghosts and Landmines

13892075_1745395102376783_6345829389568653191_n

I tiptoed on cobbled streets
Afraid that I may set off landmines
Where your memories hide
For I fear the explosion of nostalgia
Right before my eyes
So I treaded the long roads
With a watchful heart
Praying that I won’t get to see
Ghosts of the past

Memories

favim-com-25048

There you go again, waiting at the very same corner on 6th street. On most days I ignore you— at least that’s what I barely manage to do. You see, it is hard to ignore someone you’ve so desperately wanted to be a part of your life but it is harder to put up a poker face and tell the world that you are fine. There are days when I pass that corner on 6th street and I feel the urge to punch you in the face. BUT I CAN’T. How can you smack someone who isn’t even there? How can you jab a blow on just a mere memory. Call me hopeless but your memories keep on haunting me.

Wind blows from the east
Eyes shut, I heartily plead—
Take these mem’ries, please.

In response to dVerse’s Haibun Monday: A Little Romance

Tending the bar today is Toni with her piece, One on One. The challenge is to think and pull out your best romantic (or funniest or saddest) haibun ever in one or two tight paragraphs with a true classic haiku at the end – nature based with a cutting or pivot in the second line. The count will be 5-7-5 but some do write short-long-short.

To a four-year-old unanswered letter…
A Spoken Word Poem

Our story did not turn out the way you would have written it. No roses, no date nights, no kisses or tight hugs. You would have inscribed love in every line; filled the chapters with laughter and smiles. You would have carved utter bliss on our faces and our story would have had a happy ever after. We would have been bestseller.

Instead, I wrote you tragic story— a dreadful dystopia for you alone. I was a spilled ink running over your romantic scenes; an eclipse to a starry night. I was your runaway no one and you… you were the heartbroken man. I have never let you waltz with me in the path of love for you were a mess and I was a bigger mess.

And let’s accept it, we were two unruly messed up beings.

So I walked and left you in a corner, at the junction of what and why. What and why. What went wrong and why did our story end that way? No. Scratch end. It never ended, right? I tried not to see it the corners of your eyes but it was there. I could hear the dialogues in your trembling voice as your fingertips itched to resume the tale that was once written in your heart. I could feel it, it was still there.

And I am sorry.

I am sorry that I couldn’t give you a better ending. I am sorry that we couldn’t have a better beginning.

Tears at Dawn

Tears at Dawn
An Aubade

Mahal, ikaw ay nasaan?
Sa gitna ng gabi ako ay iniwan
Sa malupit na dilim, nagsusumamo
Na sana maibalik ang ‘ikaw at ako’
Ngunit mga luha ay hindi mo nilingon
Pag-ibig mo ba’y nalimot ng kahapon?
Dinggin ang pusong nagmamakaawa
Sana ay balikan sa dapit-umaga

~English Translation~

Where are you, my love?
In the middle of the night you left
In the cruel darkness I pleaded
To bring back ‘you and I’
Yet you failed to see my tears
Was love forgotten in yesteryear?
Hear this begging heart of mine
Please, come back to me at dawn

asked me not to chase your trails—

Broken Things

photo-20160606053135735

Broken Things
Realistic Fiction

“You are the weirdest friend I’ve ever known!” Selena exclaimed, staring at the dilapidated statue in Taylor’s yard.

They’ve been bestfriends since childhood— ever since the world begun. Selena’s been practically part of Taylor’s life as much as Taylor’s been part of hers. They’re two opposite poles, so much like two sides of a brain. Taylor is odd and quirky and artsy and lost in the clouds while Selena is everything Taylor’s not.

“Lena!” Taylor’s eyes beamed. “I bought this for three-dollars on a garage sale. You like?”

“I like?” she yelled, giving an unbelieving stare. “Why would someone have the nerve to sell this and why would you buy such scrap?”

“It’s my latest hobby, remember? I collect broken things.”

“Ever since Jacob broke your heart,” she argued. “You can’t mend it with those, Tay.”

Taylor’s eyes flickered with a hint of tears as she proudly spoke, “Watch me.”

Not a Walk

12814701_10205629854808957_9051044085164088226_n

I didn’t fall into love, I walked in it. No. Walk doesn’t quite describe it. Is there a word for treading upon a rocky road with your soles hammering against the rough earth?  As each foot advances over the other, another wound pierces its way onto your skin, leaving a scar that’ll last a lifetime. That what you once thought as a languid walk became a perilous one instead, is there a word for that? There must be.

Among love’s paths, I chose the one with an unforgiving darkness. Not a single light to guide my way—just a merciless void. I heedlessly marched towards you, despite being out of sight.  For I know that every road leads to an end. For you, my love, are my beginning and my end. So I walked into love’s perilous path until I bumped into a hard surface with my face slamming into a solid wall.

I didn’t fall into love, I walked in it. No. Walk doesn’t quite describe it. Is there a word for trudging upon a lonely road after reaching a dead end with your aching soles, weary heart, and exhausted soul? Yet you chose to find your way out, tiptoeing from puddles of tears and sweat you once left on your way in. Your eyes, once blind, are now accustomed to darkness so you could pick the broken pieces along the road. Until, finally, you see the light. Is there a word for that? There must be.

Her broken pieces
An indiscernible mess—
Beautiful mosaic

In response to dVerse’s Haibun Monday #13: Walking.

At last, I am able to join this year. Phew! I hope I’m not gate-crashing the poet’s pub? Thanks for hosting this, Bjorn. 😀

P.S. This one’s for one of my college best friends who is undergoing a “moving on” process (Yes dear, I’ve read your post rant). The photo above was from her HK trip.
