When I reach the twilight of my days, I pray
That I have written enough of unicorns and moonbeams
That I have never missed to marvel the beauty of sunrise
Of sunsets, rainbows and verdant greens
That I could smile at my sorrow, anguish and pain
That my poetry and prose screamed enough of my joys
My tears, ups and downs
I pray that when I reach the twilight of my days
I have slit my rib cage open enough for you to see
That amidst the world’s series of charade, I was real—
Unmasked and untamed
So you could write me a lovely eulogy
Make me chuckle at my epitaph
When I lay, in peace, six feet beneath the ground

Such a beautiful poem Maria. A character who wants to leave the world knowing she’s spread her talent and shown the real her. I love it

Exceptionally beautiful. Really you say all the words so I cannot even look for the meaning, for the meaning is clear. You should try to publish this one if you haven’t 🙂 You’re so talented.

“slit my rib cage open enough for you to see…” Powerful stuff! Yes, being real can be a very risky proposition!

I completely agree! We live in this world of conformity and sometimes we lose parts of ourselves in the process. Thank you, Gilda. 🙂

“That my poetry and prose scream enough” of your feelings and intents. These words of yours are strong. The last stanza, Maria, is so powerful: “slit my rib cage open enough for you to see/That amidst the world’s series of charade, I was real—/Unmasked and untamed.” Thoroughly stark and utterly compelling. I trust there will be no need for a eulogy for a long, long time. (Better not be.) Thank you for this!

Thank you so much for your kind words, Christopher. I appreciate them. I was “in the moment” when I wrote this one and the existentialist in me started to kick in. Yes, I hope I will not be needing a eulogy very soon. God forbid!! Have a great day (or night). 🙂

The existentialist says that who I am and where I am and what is happening now is what’s important. And it is. Certainly your voice is direct and open here–more than that, it is opening for the rest of us. I think the words about eulogies are profound. I’m simply glad to know that there is and will be no need–for a long, long while.
Love the bear in (as) the gravatar. It is a bear, isn’t it? Have a great day, too, or night!
