A Classical Haiku
Furious dimmed skies roar
Rain’s hammering the cold earth—
Mama, please be home

In response to Heeding Haiku With Chèvrefeuille at Mindlovemisery’s Menagerie.
This week I love to challenge you to create a classical haiku following the classical rules:
- 5-7-5 syllables
- you have to use a seasonword (or kigo)
- you have to use a cutting word (or kireji) (like (:), (,) or (-) just punctuation
- your haiku has to describe a moment as short as the sound of a pebble thrown into water
- try to catch a deeper meaning in it
- and last but not least, try to create a haiku in which it is possible to interchange the first and third line
The theme is “prayer”.

Ah Maria, such a lovely haiku and photo…it sent me back in time when my little girl (not so little now at 30something) would stay up until I got home when I took university classes after work…One winter during a storm, she was only 8 and she kept pacing the living room alone…her father was asleep. Such a precious little one she was and still is.

Awwee, thank you! I’m happy I’ve stirred some precious moments with this poem. You and your daughter are so sweet. And I can relate to her- pacing the living room alone. There’s no safer place than being wrapped in a mother’s arms in such frightening nights.

It was the other way around for me. My mum would be frantic, especially during the monsoon. Travelling is anyway a pain but when it rains, it’s a nightmare. So if I’m not home within the usual hours, she’d be hell worried.
